AOL and Other Stuff
February 17, 2006
Okay, America Online is being completely weird. I can't get on my AOL software. (Yes, the bill is paid.) Happily, my brother helped me set up Outlook to access my AOL mailbox, so I keep getting mail, and I keep being able to send it, but I still feel weird about it. I've talked to AOL Technicians twice on the phone - they can't seem to fix it. (They want me to re-install the software) My K says "Tell them I can't get on, either. Tell them they don't want me to call them." LOL! {sigh!} AOL doesn't care if a Marine calls them! They're STUPID!!!.
Okay, they're purple.
I love technology, when it works. When it doesn't, I just HATE it! LOL!
I'm feeling a little disconnected, which is also weird. I've been chatting online with my Lori's youngest, and a friend of his that I met over at their house when they were still living here.
There is NOTHING I can do for either one of them. One wants to be in OK, and the other just wants glasses. {GLASSES?!?!?!?!? I have glasses. I got my first pair when I was 10. It was an absolute MIRACLE to see the leaves on the trees across the street. I'm lots older than 10 now, and it really bothers me that the kid can't SEE?!?!?!?}
Glasses are cheap. Well, they were cheap when my grandkids needed them. So I bought them! Then one of my grandkids got mad and broke his . Hmmmmmm. So I said, "Glasses are pretty basic. We'll get these fixed. But you owe me, sweetie, big time." So on his 13th birthday, a few weeks later, he tried to give me his birthday money, to pay for his glasses.
I told him, "That's very nice of you, but you keep that. That's your presents. We'll work it out another way, okay?" Of course it was okay with him. He's a baby, but he isn't stupid .... er.... purple.
Okay, I know I'm rambling... Anyway, there was a workshop here, called "Bridges Out of Poverty." Lots of the people where I work went. I didn't. But what a concept! What if a mindset keeps people thinking poor? And so behaving poor? What about "I have enough." ?
I went to a luncheon on Wednesday, and two people spoke there, to thank the people in the room who had served in a social services setting for x number of years. (I was one of them. I have a Certificate! LOL! I'm going to get it FRAMED!)
They were just an amazing couple. The woman spoke about Islam, and I thought, at the beginning, "Uh oh! Which hat do I have on? Democrat, Republican, Mom-of-a-Marine, Unitarian????" Turns out, I didn't need a hat at all. They were MARVELOUS. Telling two stories -- one about a person who helped build schools in other countries -- he was a Muslim -- so he paid for scholarships. 20 of them, every year. Each scholarship cost $7000 American. That's $7000 x 20 = $140,000 A YEAR. The schools didn't teach Islam. The schools teach responsible planet-hood. His reason? "I have enough.' (He lived in a two bedroom apartment with his wife and two children. He was happy, there.)
The other story was about a man who went to India, and took supplies with him, so that he could put eye ointment on each child he met in the street who had conjuctivitious. That's pink eye, which is highly contagious.... (See, without the ointment, those babies, also without antibiotics, would grow up BLIND.) When he ran out of supplies, he came back to America, and earned enough to get some more supplies, and went back. "Because I can" he said.
One story was a big picture story. The other was a one-kid- at-a-time story. Can you tell them apart? LOL!
Me, neither.
