This Is What I Know

The Pope

April 2, 2005

I am 55 years old.

I ‘remember’ Popes.

I am not a Catholic. (Catholic, by the way, means – ‘Universal’)

I was raised an Episcopalian. An old friend of mine defined Episcopalian as “Catholics who flunked Latin.”

It was funny, at the time. (This is the same friend who said, “Say something in Episcopalian.”)

Today, I am a Unitarian, as was Thomas Jefferson before me, and Benjamin Franklin, too.

At THIS time, 2005, this is what I know……

John Paul II lived for what he believed, and he did that because of what he experienced.

He experienced everything we all tried to not to notice, and he experienced some things we had no clue about.

I am not a Roman Catholic. However, if there are still Saints – in this time, in this world, probably he is one. He was an excellent Pope.

He lived it, he was it, and he was/is, probably, a Saint.

If any person really walks in the shoes of the Fisherman, REALLY -- then probably, he did.

In the last 2000 years, only the Catholic Church has named Saints.

Until today.
